Supplemental Dental Insurance: Understanding What It Means

Dental Insurance, Supplemental Comments Off

What are supplemental dental insurance plans?

Supplemental dental insurance is exactly what it sounds like, it is a plan that can supplement your basic dental care plan. Many people who get insurance through work find that their basic plan is not very comprehensive. Without a supplemental plan they would have to pay hundreds or thousands out of pocket.

However, it’s necessary to understand that supplemental dental insurance providers are not necessarily your typical insurance companies. You need to do research and see who provides for the needs you require. There are some groups and plans like: AARP, Medicare and Aetna, that you can get a dental insurance supplement with. Often another term people use when referring to these plans is discount dental insurance, as it is less expensive than full coverage dental insurance, but not as comprehensive.

What is the best supplemental dental insurance?

That really depends on you and your family’s needs. For instance, consider supplemental dental insurance for braces. If you are a young family with only small children you do not need to get that right now. Additionally, you should check what your basic plan covers and whether the plan allows for two different companies to cover the cost. For instance sometimes you can have your basic plan through one spouse’s work and then have supplemental dental insurance coverage through the other spouse’s work. This is not beneficial though if there is a clause in one of the plans that it does not allow dual payment.

Who can benefit most from a supplemental dental insurance plan?

Such plans are good for a variety of individuals:

1. Self employed workers — without such a plan they would have to pay for this type of work out of pocket.

2. Business owners — those who are looking to offer a plan for their employees can often get great deals for them even with as few as ten employees you can join through a group plan and increase the benefits you offer your employees at a smaller price.

3. Someone with great dental needs — if you have basic insurance however you and your family’s dental needs are greater than what your primary dental insurance plan provides then getting a supplementary plan can greatly help your budget.

How does supplemental dental insurance differ from full coverage dental insurance?

A full coverage plan is more likely to be your primary dental plan and typically it is quite comprehensive, although you have to do your research to see if it really does cover the type of dental work you need. And then depending on what is covered you would look into supplemental insurance or a discount dental plan to fill in the gaps of what your full coverage plan does not cover.

When considering what company to go with, make sure to look on a local level as well as national level. You might be able to find the least expensive supplemental dental insurance in your state or city as opposed to from a major insurance company. Depending on the area you live in, the costs will vary tremendously, so do some serious research before deciding if local or national is the right way to go.
